For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Advent Course: Living with Hope

This Advent, we will reflect on faith and science, focusing particularly on the challenging but important themes of the Four Last Things, which, for centuries, Christians have been encouraged to ponder and pray about during this season of waiting in faith:
Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell.

We will draw on the wise reflections of the Revd Dr John Polkinghorne, a professor of theoretical physics at Cambridge, who also became an ordained priest and theologian.

To prepare for each discussion, we do invite you to
read these suggested Bible passages before each session:

• November 29th, Theme: Death and Mortality; Read Mark 14:32-36; Romans 5:12-17 & 8:35-39; Luke 12:16-20; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.

• December 6th, Theme: Judgment and Wisdom; Read John 3:16-21; Romans 7:7-25; Matthew 25:37-46; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15; Matthew 7:1-3.

• December 13th, Theme: Heaven and New Life; Read Mark 12:18-27; 2 Corinthians 5:1-10; Revelation 7:9-17; Revelation 21:1-22:5.

• December 20th, Theme: Hell (Health in the Spirit v Cynicism); Read Revelation 20:11-15; John 1:1-14; Mark 3:20-30; John 18:28-38.
