For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Sam Van Leer

Weekday Church workdays: Monday, Wednesday & Friday.  (Regular office hours 10-12:00 on those days.)  Days off (for research): Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Originally from the US, I came to Europe for graduate study, but then fell in love with Coretta and the Continent, and followed a calling into ordained pastoral ministry in the Church of England.  I trained at Cranmer Hall, St John’s College, in beautiful Durham, England, and have served in the Diocese in Europe ever since, first in Bern and Neuchâtel (Switzerland), then Arnhem, Nijmegen and Twente (the Netherlands) and now in the city and province of Groningen. Besides working with a terrific team of Christians to build up Grace Anglican Church Groningen, I am a University Chaplain and Assistant Director of Ordinands for the Diocese in Europe, and have served from 2015-2017 as Area Dean for the Netherlands.  I am also Archdeacon for Northwest Europe (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) and am working on a PhD at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.
